Vicki Boyer wrote this article about the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Education that she attended on 6/2/14. I have NC NOW’s facebook page introduction to her article, and a link to the article.
“Cuts to education in NC have gone beyond ‘bare bones’ and into the category of ‘mortal wound.’ This has to stop.” Vicki Boyer heard this in House Appropriations Subcommittee Meetings on Education on Tues, 6/2/14. The Senate budget made more drastic cuts in the number of teacher assistants. It shows a 30% cut to the Department of Public Instruction (DPI). See other cuts and quotes in her article, “Saddest Meeting of All,” at http://www.bluenc.com/saddest-meeting-all
More people need to write their NC Senate and House Representatives about what they are doing to public education. Just in education alone, you could talk about any of these areas – K-12 public schools, community colleges, the UNC system, the State Board of Education, DPI, Independent Colleges. These are brutal decisions – especially when so much of the public money was diverted to tax breaks for the wealthy and profitable corporations in the 2013 budget.
Soon North Carolinians who have or want to have children will be following teachers out of the state.
