Wheel Of Misfortune, Die In at 6/27/17 Tillis Protest

The Wheel of Misfortune was the coolest feature of the last “Tuesdays with Tillis” protest. Citizens have been protesting in front of Senator Thom Tillis’ office in Raleigh every Tuesday for a few months at this point, but the protest really grew on 6/27/17.  It was expanded with energy of some other groups – Protecting Progress In Durham and Progress North Carolina Action among others. The message was to tell Senator Thom Tillis to vote NO on any “healthcare” bill that takes away coverage from anybody.

About 160 people went to protest at the Federal Building where Senator Thom Tillis has his Raleigh office, 310 New Bern Ave, in Raleigh. 160 people!

The event had multiple parts. In the beginning was the regular Tuesdays With Tillis program – gathering, and marching in protest. Lots of great signs.

At 12:15, the “Wheel Of Misfortune'” was introduced and used. The “Wheel Of Misfortune shows conditions not covered by Trumpcare plans (like Diabetes, Cancer, Mental Illness, Heart Disease) as well as likely outcomes of not having coverage (bankruptcy and death). Spins of the wheel and speakers were interspersed. The wheel even clicked as it turned. Priceless!

There was a dramatic die-in, extending in back of picture as well.

The last step of the event happened when two young women from the Protest Progress In Durham group tried to deliver a wreath to Senator Tillis’ office. The wreath was decorated with mocked up rejected insurance cards of people who would get kicked off their insurance if the Republicans’ bill passed.

Tillis’ office was originally going to send someone to receive the wreath, but that person was intimidated by the crowd, so they sent a policeman out to give instructions for exactly one person to bring the wreath to the office after everyone else left. No photos.

The event got national coverage—

Rachel Maddow show caught the wreath but missed the inspired “Wheel of Misfortune. “

Next Tuesdays with Tillis event has the theme of women and children who would lose coverage under Trumpcare. It’s Tuesday, July 11th, in front of Tillis’ office in Raleigh. On July 5, the theme was Veterans care.
