National Actions To Take NOW!

We have 3 actions to take on national issues. Oppose the House Budget which slashes trillions of dollars from healthcare, food and income assistance, education and more. Oppose HR 38 – giving domestic violence offenders the right to stalk and kill their intimate partners across state lines! Oppose HR 36 – another abortion ban.

Thank you to National Task Force to End Sexual & Domestic Violence and to National Women’s Law Center for the information.

Action Alert 1: Tell your Rep. to vote “NO” on the US House budget: it slashes trillions from Medicaid, Medicare, food and income assistance, education, housing and more. It takes the money to pay for tax cuts for the wealthy, and for corporations!

Monday-Wednesday, Oct 2-4: Call Your Rep and Say NO!

Find your NC Congressman or Congresswoman in the United States  House of Representatives at “Who Represents Me.”

This week – probably Thursday, Oct. 5 – the House of Representatives is expected to take up the Budget Resolution approved by the House Budget Committee.  They’re doing it to fast-track trillions of dollars in tax cuts that will overwhelmingly go to the wealthy and corporations.  The budget pays for these tax cuts by cutting $5.7 trillion over ten years from essential services – everything from Medicaid, Medicare, SNAP/food stamps, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) for poor elderly and people with disabilities, tax credits for low-income workers, K-12 and college education assistance, housing aid, public health services, medical research, environmental and consumer protections, and most other domestic programs. From babies to elders, and everyone in the middle who isn’t rich – we all will feel the brunt of these cuts.

Action Alert 2: Protect survivors from gun violence: Stop H.R. 38! Stop the U.S. House of Representatives from giving domestic violence offenders the right to stalk and kill their intimate partners across state lines.

Contact your Representative now through OCTOBER 5 and urge them to oppose the bill!  Find your NC Congressman or Congresswoman in the United States  House of Representatives at “Who Represents Me.”

In the next couple of weeks, the House may vote on a bill that would make it terrifyingly easy for abusers to legally carry concealed firearms into other states when stalking their victims (this bill may also be added as an amendment to the SHARE Act – HR. 3668 – another very harmful bill that, among other things, deregulates silencers and aids gun traffickers, or to other legislation).  H.R. 38, Representative Hudson’s (R-NC-08) ‘Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act of 2017’ would undercut existing state and local protections for victims of domestic and dating violence — and replace those protections with the weakest gun laws in the country. It’s a race to the bottom. And survivors of domestic violence will be the losers.

Phone script: “My name is [your name], I am from [city and organization, if applicable]. I am a constituent, and I oppose H.R. 38, Representative Hudson’s bill that imposes federally-mandated concealed carry reciprocity on my state. H.R.38 makes it harder for law enforcement to protect victims of domestic violence, puts victims of domestic violence and law enforcement officers at risk of gun violence, is a violation of the Constitution’s guarantee of states’ rights, and makes our communities less safe. I oppose H.R.38 as a stand-alone bill and/or as an amendment to other legislation and oppose H.R. 3668, the SHARE Act, which puts communities at risk by deregulating silencers and aiding gun traffickers. I urge [name of Member of Congress] to oppose them as well.”

There is a lot more information on both of these actions, including a phone script to oppose HR 38. Email president at raleighnow.org  and we will forward the email we got from the National Task Force to End Sexual and Domestic Violence in DC.

Action Alert 3: Tell Your Representative to Oppose the Abortion Ban with NWLCThe House of Representatives is poised to vote on a blatantly unconstitutional bill that would enact an extreme abortion ban – nationwide. This abortion ban would harm our health and lives by ignoring our individual circumstances and interfering in the patient-doctor relationship. Exactly when did members of Congress become our personal medical experts? (Answer: Never.) This is a quick, easy action with NWLC.
