DC friends are hearing from Senate staff that there are not enough calls going to the Senate to stop the tax bill which will inevitably result in cuts to health care programs and more pain for the middle class and the poor. Please share widely. But first, call or write NOW! THIS IS A FIVE ALARM FIRE!!!!!!!
The “tax cuts and jobs act” bill does huge damage, including
- eliminates the Affordable Care Act’s individual mandate
- reduces services affecting women’s reproductive health, including the right to safe, legal abortions
- eliminates the personal medical deduction
- eliminates tax law provisions that help to finance the development of health care facilities or the development of low-income housing
According to National NOW in “GOP Tax Bills Irresponsible – Will Harm Women and Families, there is a world of hurt just in one point itself, “the repeal of the individual mandate under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), resulting in at least a 10 percent hike in premiums, 13 million persons losing health insurance, and the eventual demise of the ACA.”
The NC Justice Center talks about how bad the process is. An action from them says in part:
“Rushing a tax bill that would raise our deficit and raise taxes on ordinary families simply to benefit the richest is not a good plan. As your constituent, I find the Senate tax bill and the process that is being used to pass it unacceptable.”
“If the Senate is really serious about getting tax overhaul right then it needs to demonstrate this by ensuring there is open debate, input from key stakeholders, and time for adequate analysis of all the provisions in the bill.”
Sen. Richard Burr – Phone: (202) 224-3154
Sen. Thom Tillis – Phone: (202) 224-6342
Call Senators to vote NO on the so called Tax Cut and Jobs Act bill! You can call and say: “Hello, my name is ____ and I’m a woman/man concerned about this terrible bill. The tax bill would repeal the individual mandate and increase pressure to gut safety net programs like Medicaid in future budgets. I demand that you VOTE NO on the tax bill!”
If you cannot get through by phone, then please email them. Use the links to Burr and Tillis at “How to contact NC’s US Senators – Burr and Tillis.” An advantage of writing either way is that the Senators can receive your complete message (not a paraphrased version or simple vote for/against), and someone in the office will write you back.
There are many many articles on how bad this tax scam bill is. Read this editorial by Paul Krugman, an American economist who is currently Distinguished Professor of Economics at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, and a columnist for The New York Times.
Please call or email asap! They must hear from us!
