The Time For Justice Is NOW: NC NOW State Conference on 11/9/19
Raleigh, NC – There are many examples of injustice around us: women’s health being targeted, disparities in school suspensions along racial lines, women’s reports of sexual assault and harassment being discounted, treatment of migrants and immigrants, mass incarceration of minorities, underpayment for women’s work, re-segregation of our schools to name just a few. NC National Organization for Women is working on some of these issues at our annual conference on Saturday, November 9, 2019, in Charlotte.
Conference attendees will hear from local and regional speakers regarding threats to reproductive access including bills banning abortions, giving away taxpayer money to religious anti-abortion clinics, and cutting off a trusted and proven provider of real medical care to the women most impacted by attacks on reproductive health access. We are also sharing stories of courage from immigrant women, having a panel on gender equity and equality in the workplace, as well as teaching skills, like using Googledocs to organize.
Our keynote speaker is Rep. Deb Butler, who represents downtown Wilmington and parts of Brunswick County. Rep. Butler gained national attention for her impassioned rebuke of House Speaker Tim Moore after he called for a vote on Governor Cooper’s veto of the state budget during a session that Democrats and the media had been told would be a non-voting session. Republican representatives, by contrast, had been told to “be in your seats.”
