Showing off the impressive cluelessness and hatefulness of a rich white man, the architect of Texas abortion ban, Jonathan Franklin Mitchell, writes in supreme court brief that ‘women can “control their reproductive lives” without access to abortion. Yeah, right. See “Women can say no to sex if Roe falls, says architect of Texas abortion ban,” 9/17/21, The Guardian.
Mitchell and a colleague filed an amicus brief to the Mississippi 15 week abortion ban case, also blatantly unconstitutional, calling for Roe to be overturned and “said such a decision could open the door for other “lawless” rights and protections to be reversed, including the right to have gay sex and the right to same-sex marriage.”
They hope to get rid of safe and legal abortion, same sex marriage and more.
“Many Texans are now forced to travel hundreds of miles out of state for the health care they need or carry pregnancies against their will,” wrote Susanna Birdsong in “Opinion: North Carolina at risk for Texas-style ban on abortion access,” 9/13/21, Fayetteville Observer. She continues,
“Abortion may not be banned in North Carolina, but a web of medically unnecessary and arbitrary restrictions have already prevented many people from accessing this care, inflicting serious harm on patients, particularly people of color, people who live in rural parts of the state, and people experiencing financial hardship.“
North Carolina has its own two abortion ban bills filed in 2021. There was a 6 week abortion ban filed in March. See “The Truth About Six Week Abortion Bans,” 3/10/21, NC NOW website. NC filed another abortion ban bill, HB453, which was ratified by the NC House and Senate, but thankfully vetoed by Governor Roy Cooper. Professor Rebecca Todd Peters’ at Elon University talks about ‘reason bans’ in “The Governor was right to veto a dangerous abortion bill,” 8/4/21, Charlotte Observer. She wrote,
“Reason bans are the most recent strategy to curtail access to abortion across the country. The U.S. conversation about abortion has historically been shaped by a justification framework, meaning that women are expected to offer ‘justifiable’ reasons to end their pregnancies.”
Women’s March on Raleigh organizer Penney De Pas responded to the professor’s article in “Legislature Full Of Hypocrisy With Abortion Ban Bill,” 9/9/21, NC NOW website.
Tara Romano wrote, “Some specifics are new, but the tactics and objectives underlying the new Texas abortion law are quite familiar,” 9/16/21, NC Policy Watch.

What you can do is write your own Letters To the Editor (LTEs) or op-eds. You should also write your representatives in the NC House and Senate. Find them at https://ncleg.gov/FindYourLegislators. Also support organizations that are fighting this.
