North Carolina NOW Legislative Update #18 – 31 May 2021

With the notable exception of the action on House Bill 453, this was another slow week at the legislature.  There have been very few committee meetings or floor votes for two weeks since the crossover deadline of May 13. A state budget impasse continues. Be sure to take action on HB453 which is moving in the NC Senate.

North Carolina NOW Legislative Update #17 – 24 May 2021

This was a slow week at the legislature following a week of frantic activity last week to pass bills to meet the crossover deadline. The main action is taking place behind closed doors and concerns the budget. Most of the good bills we have been following, with the exception of those that include an appropriation, are dead for this session. However, the two bad abortion bills are very much alive and need your attention and action. For more information about these bills and how to take action to oppose them, see

North Carolina NOW Legislative Update #16 – 17 May 2021

There was a lot of frantic activity at the legislature this week because Thursday was the crossover deadline.  A bill must pass either the House or the Senate before the crossover deadline to remain alive.  There are exceptions, most notably appropriations bills (any bill that contains an appropriation), but generally this rule holds true.  The two very bad abortion bills are still alive and a handful of good bills made the deadline.

North Carolina NOW Legislative Update #15 – 10 May 2021

Very bad news on the abortion front. The House rammed though House Bill 453 that purports to ban abortion based on eugenics. It now goes to the Senate for consideration. A second abortion bill is also moving. Senate Bill 405 that claims to prevent doctors from murdering babies born alive after an abortion procedure (something that is already illegal) has passed the Senate Health Care Committee. It is currently in the Senate Rules Committee, but it is eligible to be scheduled for a floor vote at any time.

Act NOW to Stop NC Anti-Abortion Bill HB453 – Onus on Doctors to Question Women, Document Reasons!

North Carolina has a Black maternal health crisis in as well as gaps in reproductive health care that was further exposed during the pandemic. The maternal death rate is especially high in North Carolina. North Carolina ranks 30th out of the 50 states. Nationally Black women are two to three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related issues than white or Hispanic women. The United States has the highest maternal death rate of all the Western democracies, and, most alarmingly, the rate has been rising. North Carolina NOW supports the passage of the North Carolina Momnibus Act  (SB632/HB 507) that targets the Black maternal health crisis in the state and addresses the gaps in reproductive health care during the pandemic. Here is an action for you to take to push our representatives to end the Black maternal health crisis NOW!

North Carolina NOW Legislative Update #11 – 12 April 2021

This week saw the introduction of two terrible bills.  The religious right has had so much success on the medical front passing laws to regulate abortion and abortion providers, they have decided to widen the scope of their activities to deny trans youth medical care (SB 514). The second bill (SB 515) would legalize medical discrimination across the board by introducing a bill that would allow doctors and other medical personnel along with hospitals and other medical practices to deny medical care to anyone for conscientious reasons.  It is worthwhile to examine these two bills in detail because they provide important insight into the kind of world these religious extremists desire.

North Carolina NOW Legislative Update #10 – 5 April 2021

This week saw the introduction of what is probably an historic number of bills to protect LGBTQ rights. All are much needed and way overdue. Bills further restricting women’s reproductive rights were also introduced. Read here about HB 2, the LBGTQ or gay panic defense, conversion therapy and the state of NC’s anti-discrimination law now.
