Pro-choice Signature Ad Packets Delivered on 6/4/18

NC NOW members delivered the pro-choice signature ad packets to all of our representatives in the NC House and NC Senate on Monday, 6/4/18. The packets included a copy of the pro-choice signature ad that we ran in Indy Week in January (as we do every year), and a letter from NC NOW.

This year the letter was somewhat focused on the terrible budget process which blocked input from all Democratic lawmakers and maybe some Republican ones as well. The letter also talked about inappropriate uses of taxpayer money in the budget. See the letter below.

$1.55 Million in Taxpayer Money Going to CPCs in NC Budget

Information and Actions to take!

The NCGA is giving taxpayer money away to Crisis Pregnancy Centers (CPC). They gave $1.3 million away in the budget they passed in 2017, and have increased the amount in the budget they passed in 2018 to $1.55 million! The money is going to three CPC umbrella organizations! These clinics are not health clinics, and they are often tied up in religion. Actions to take are at the end.

The 2017 NC state budget gave away $1.3 million to a Crisis Pregnancy Center (CPC) parent organization, Carolina Pregnancy Care Fellowship, an anti-abortion group that operates 8 clinics in North Carolina. The NC legislature gave away this money with no strings attached and no milestones or controls on services provided. The legislative majority had planned to give $1.3 million away to CPCs two years in a row.

In 2018, the Republicans who wrote the state budget behind closed doors raised that amount –  they are now giving away $1.55 million, and they’ve made some changes to the taxpayer money recipients. This money isn’t going to health care for low income women, it isn’t expanding Medicaid to help low income women and men. Taxpayer money is being delivered to three CPC parent organizations, as follows.

  • $1 million to the Carolina Pregnancy Care Fellowship (same one that benefited last budget)
  • $300,000 to “The Human Coalition” which describes itself explicitly as opposing the “abortion industry.”
  • $250,000 is going to a third anti-abortion pregnancy clinic, Mountain Area Pregnancy Services in Asheville.

You Can’t Believe this Terrible NC State Budget

Even just the titles of the listed articles give you an idea how terrible this state budget is. This is the state budget for which the NCGA leadership subverted the process so there can be no amendments or discussion on it. NC NOW Vice President of Legislation Robin Davis described how this was done and why  in the NC NOW Legislative Update for the Short Session #2. When she wrote it, most people, including Democratic lawmakers, had not even seen the budget yet! Now more people have seen it and many are angry and upset! These articles explain a few of the major issues being discovered in this budget that was written behind closed doors, and delve in if you dare!

There have been some amazingly scathing articles on the legislative leadership (Senator Phil Berger & Rep. Tim Moore) circumventing the normal budget process. Berger and Moore and their buddies are shutting out the voices of citizens and other lawmakers. Here are 2 of my favorites.

Real Money for Fake Women’s Clinics

Funneling money to fake women’s clinics while defunding Planned Parenthood sends a clear message that our leadership does not care about women’s health; especially low-income women.

At this event, we will talk about what CPCs are, and focus on an issue an aspect of which is currently under consideration by the Supreme Court: Crisis Pregnancy Centers, CPCs, which lie to women and scare and manipulate them in order to prevent them from having abortions.

In North Carolina, eight centers associated with the Carolina Pregnancy Care Fellowship are receiving 1.3 million dollars in state taxpayer money a year – $2.6 million over 2 years! That money should be going to women’s real health care needs. There are 112 CPCs in North Carolina, and only about 13 abortion clinics.

WHAT:  Rally to protest federal and North Carolina policies regarding women’s health care, “Real Money for Fake Women’s Clinics”

WHEN: Tuesday, May 22,  11:30 am-12:00pm

Protect Reproductive Healthcare! Save Lives! 4/10/18

President Trump’s policies and Congress have had a disastrous affect on women and families in North Carolina, the United States and the world.  On Tuesday April 10 at 11:30 am, members and supporters of NC NOW (National Organization of Women), NARAL Pro-Choice North Carolina, El Pueblo, and Population Connection join Tuesdays with Tillis Indivisible ask that Senator Tillis respond with legislative support to remedy the repressive policies which cost women their lives.

Join us as we concentrate on reproductive care and reproductive justice policies at the federal level.  Do you know there is a US policy which cuts off all US health funding for other countries as America tries to control other countries’ reproductive care?  It’s the Global Gag Rule, which President Trump instated and massively expanded in January 2017.  And Congress renews the heinous Hyde Amendment every year! The Hyde Amendment prohibits low income women, federal employees and their dependents and others from using their own insurance or Medicaid to cover abortions. This means Congress targets a range of women from getting a specific medical procedure via the Hyde Amendment – and has done so every year since 1976.

“The Hyde Amendment is nothing more than playing politics with the lives of those who traditionally have lacked access to quality, affordable care, such as poor women, rural communities and young people,” said Tara Romano, Executive Director of NARAL Pro-Choice North Carolina.

Bus to Rally in DC Against Fake Clinics (CPCs) Telling Lies – 3/20/18

“What’s more important? The right to spread lies, fear and shame under the guise of free speech? Or the right of people seeking health care and counseling during pregnancy to receive accurate, unbiased, and comprehensive information from a licensed medical facility? An upcoming Supreme Court case may decide just that.” – Lynne Walter, Naral Pro-Choice NC

The Supreme Court said in November 2017 that it would decide whether California violates free speech guarantees to require “crisis pregnancy centers” (CPCs) to tell patients the truth about access to contraception services and abortion assistance. Even though the opening arguments start this month (March, 2018), standard media is not covering the case – but the anti-abortion groups are!

On Tuesday, March 20, the U.S. Supreme Court (in Washington DC) will hear oral arguments in (National Institute of Family and Life Advocates) NIFLA v. Becerra, a case that fake women’s health centers brought to the court to overturn a California law (California Reproductive FACT ACT) that provides people with access to full and accurate information about their reproductive health options. Becerra is California Attorney General Xavier Becerra.

Great Feminist Theatre in Raleigh! (Jan/Feb 2018)

Two great feminist plays coming right up in Raleigh – “What We’re Up Against” on gender discrimination in the workplace and The Vagina Monologues (20 year anniversary!). Support the arts! Support women! Maintain interest in these issues!

1. “What We’re Up Against” from 1992 – so relevant in the #MeToo era!

As the high profile sexual harassment and assault allegations continue, and are validated, this comedy more than resonates.

“Set in a highly competitive architecture firm, What We’re Up Against takes an explosive look at the complicated battle of the sexes raging across Cubicle Land. A funny yet insightful view of what it means to be female in a male-dominated career and one woman’s response when she tires of slamming into the glass ceiling.” (According to a book summary I found online)

A New Horizon Is Coming – Fayetteville Women’s Rally, 1/20/18

Fayetteville Chapter of NOW is sponsoring a Women’s Rally, on Saturday, January 20, 2018, at 1pm at the Downtown Market House in Fayetteville, North Carolina.

We are commemorating the anniversary of last year’s historic Women’s March on Washington (2017), and more importantly, we are celebrating the 45th anniversary of the Supreme Court Decision Roe v Wade (January 22, 1973).  It’s that historic ruling that declared women’s right to privacy, afforded via the 14th amendment (due process), extends and affords women the right to have an abortion.

Additionally, we ask women who believe and realize that they can make a difference to stand with us, to join us.  It will be the women (and the men who support us) working to dismantle the barriers that create the following.
