July 30, 2018 is the 53rd anniversary of President Lyndon B. Johnson signing the bill that led to Medicare and Medicaid into law. The programs were intended in part to remove racial segregation practiced by hospitals and other health care facilities at the time. Read about both programs here.
How Trump Administration changes to the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and to Title X will hurt women. Here are many things people may not realize about women and health insurance. You will be shocked that women were charged more as a matter of course (called gender rating) and what was considered a pre-existing condition before ACA. DC friends are hearing from Senate staff that there are not enough calls going to the Senate to stop the tax bill which will inevitably result in cuts to health care programs and more pain for the middle class and the poor. Call or write NOW! THIS IS A FIVE ALARM FIRE!
We have 3 actions to take on national issues. Oppose the House Budget which slashes trillions of dollars from healthcare, food and income assistance, education and more. Oppose HR 38 – giving domestic violence offenders the right to stalk and kill their intimate partners across state lines! Oppose HR 36 – another abortion ban.
Have you called your Senators yet to tell them to vote AGAINST the latest terrible Trumpcare proposal? Please do. We *MUST* persist. See what is in the latest bad bill, and where to call and write.
ACA has some issues to be addressed, but it has helps tons of people – and the Republican Senate is intent on destroying it, and destroying these people in the process. In NC, tell Senators Burr and Tillis that you know that they voted against providing life-saving treatment to millions of people in the United States. They owe us better than that – improve ACA and use a decent bi-partisan process to do it. The cruel Trumpcare bills had already targetted women, who had been helped more by ACA.
The Wheel of Misfortune was the coolest feature of the last “Tuesdays with Tillis” protest. Also included a march, speakers, a die-in and attempted delivery of a dramatic wreath. July 5 theme is taking coverage away from Veterans. The July 11 theme is women and children.
