Even More Benefits From Expanding Medicaid NOW!

There is one thing that would significantly help North Carolinians in every part of the state – Medicaid expansion. Expanding Medicaid would be a huge win – providing more health care in every county, more health care jobs in every county, pump billions of federal money into the state, provide support for rural hospitals and people, and also bring ripple effect benefits to communities around the state.  As you may know, past Governor Pat McCrory signed away the governor’s ability to expand Medicaid as one of the first things he did in 2013, so the NC Legislature has control of that. There is more pressure for the NC Legislature to expand Medicaid since the federal pandemic relief bill from March 2021 contains even more great incentives to add on to all the other wins NC would get by expanding Medicaid. More at North Carolina Health News – https://www.northcarolinahealthnews.org/2021/03/18/medicaid-expansion-incentives-pandemic-relief-bill/. The new American Rescue Plan includes “substantial incentives for states to expand Medicaid, as well as [providing] spending boosts to improve care for new moms, people with disabilities.”  Expanding Medicaid would inherently help more women (and their children/families), since more women fall into this working poor space.

Watch “Roe 2021: Will There Be Choice in NC?” Here!

Wondering about the future of abortion access in NC? Anti-abortion lawmakers dominate the legislative leadership and the Supreme Court of the United States.  What happens in NC if Roe falls? What other options do we have? How can we help get access to other options? NOW chapters had a panel of experts via Zoom on January 27th, and you can watch it any time at the link in this post.

Roe 2021: Will There Be Choice in NC?

Chapel Hill NOW, Durham NOW, and Raleigh NOW (North Carolina) are collaborating on a Zoom event to commemorate the 48th anniversary of Roe v. Wade on January 27th. Our speakers are looking at the future of reproductive access if the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) should be able to overrule or otherwise undo the Roe v. Wade decision which gave women control over their own bodies. Speakers will talk about what NC law would revert to without Roe, and also how telemedicine is changing abortion health care.

Davis: Lawsuit Challenges Abortion Restrictions in North Carolina

A lawsuit filed by the Civil Liberties Union of North Carolina along with abortion providers and reproductive justice organizations is challenging five medically unnecessary restrictions on abortion passed over the years.  The suit was filed in Wake County Superior Court. These restrictions have pushed abortion out of reach in N.C. and have stigmatized essential health care. The suit holds that the restrictions deny basic rights guaranteed under the North Carolina Constitution  and disproportionately impact communities of color, especially Black communities, along with rural communities.

SCOTUS Follows Precedent in Louisiana June Medical Services v. Russo Case

Incredible and surprising great news from the US Supreme Court (SCOTUS) on the June Medical Services v. Russo case from Louisiana. SCOTUS should not have even heard this case. But with a majority of conservatives on board – they did. Between the unnecessary admitting privileges change and Louisiana’s request to take away the ability for abortion providers to sue on behalf of their patients, as they’ve been doing for decades, this could have been really devastating.

Legislature Refuses Gift of Medicaid Expansion Again – 5/5/20

The pandemic is exposing people and institutions who were barely getting by and now will fail with insufficient assistance. Rural hospitals were already doing badly, and now are doing worse. Yet, the NC legislature continues to refuse the gift of Medicaid Expansion which would alleviate health and economic problems across in every county if implemented fully.

Raleigh Women’s March 2020 Was Another Hit!

Thousands of women and allies, including many children, went to the 4th Annual Women’s March in Raleigh on Sunday, 1/26/20. Most had signs on posters, on their shirts or other clothes.  Some wore pink pussy hats, even on the mild sunny day (54 in January!) The event began with a march starting at the Legislative Building (the people’s  house) and all the way around Halifax Mall, led by some of the organizers chanting. People surged in to Halifax Mall, still chanting!
