Equal Means Equal Screening and Discussion – 9/17/19

Equal Means Equal is a groundbreaking film on women’s rights.

Learn about the true status of women and girls in the United States. This documentary follows Kamala Lopez as she journeys across the country to learn what women think about their lives, and how or if they want them to change. The interviews tell the stories of four generations of American women grappling with the status of their rights, the issues they face and how these have impacted our society. Lopez talks with women from the well-known, such as actress Patricia Arquette, and legendary feminist Gloria Steinem, to the unknown, including gang girls and hotel maids, to find out how being female impacts daily life, whether economically, politically or socially.

The film runs 90 minutes. Afterward, there will be time for discussion. You will want to discuss!

Stop The Terror, Close The Camps, 7/2/19

The treatment of immigrants and immigrant children is heartbreaking, and must be stopped. Children’s situations are reported in their own words, in  “Children Inside Texas Detention Centers Describe Squalid Conditions” by the RollingStone, on 6/27/19. One child after another states how bad conditions are inside Texas detention camps.

Owens: There Is No Cycle Of Abuse

I wish I had a nickel for every time I hear the phrase “the cycle of abuse.” It’s constant. People say about victims,”she really needs to break the cycle!” (This makes me so angry! As if the victim could do that anyway, when she has no control of the abuse – its not HER behavior!)

Here’s what you need to know. There IS NO “cycle” of abuse. We don’t need to be using that term. If you use it, please stop.

DV Expert Julie Owens at Voices of Domestic Violence Town Hall in Winston-Salem on 4/11/19

The cycle theory of abuse is no longer used by professionals in this field because we understand DV much, much better after decades of work with victims, and learning from them.
