NC NOW State Conference Summary – Oct 9 and 10, 2020

Summary of the 2020 NC NOW State Conference. We tried a split approach, holding some activities on Friday evening, Oct 9 and then continuing on Saturday morning, Oct 10. Our keynote speaker on Saturday was the new National NOW President, Christian Nunes. Nunes, who spoke on voting and voter suppression in this all important 2020 election, and also about her vision for NOW. This speech went with our theme of “Voting Our Future NOW!” Included here are links a recording of the Friday evening program which includes the recording of the Military #MeToo panel and to Dr. Johnson’s speech on “Racial Injustice in the Justice System For Women.”

With a conference theme of “Voting Our Future NOW,” the North Carolina National Organization for Women (NC NOW) is joining the many organizations who have moved to virtual format to continue going forward during the COVID-19 pandemic. Panel on Military #MeToo Reaching Fort Bragg and Fayetteville

We’re having a panel on how the Military #MeToo movement can improve handling of sex crimes at Fort Bragg and Fayetteville. Lots of problems with handling of sexual assault and sexual harassment in the military as you may have heard (#VanessaGuillen). The workload at Rape Crisis of Cumberland has increased a lot over the past few years, much of it helping sexual assault victims from Fort Bragg. We are honored to have Deanne Gerdes, executive director of Rape Crisis, and also Captain Erin Scanlon a rape survivor turned advocate, as panelists.

Be Ready To Vote At NOW’s National Conference on First Day, Sept 26, 2020

NOW’s National Conference will be held virtually over 3 days in 3 different months, starting on September 26, then Oct 17 and Nov 7. Our new NOW President, Christian Nunes, is presiding.

Announcement of National NOW Board Candidates – Election is 9/26/20

These are the national NOW board candidates on whom we are voting at the National Conference on 9/26/20. The Eastern and Heartland districts have uncontested elections at this time. Eastern could fit another candidate for an election after the conference. NC is in the Eastern district.

Racial Injustice in the Justice System For Women, with Dr. Valerie A. Johnson

The history of policing of people of color in America has led to this moment where people are rising up to assert that Black Lives Matter. There tends to be a lot of  focus on killings of Black and Brown men. Dr. Valerie Johnson will focus on the systemic violence against women of color, which is ignored besides notable exceptions, like Breonna Taylor and Sandra Bland.

NC NOW welcomes new NOW president Christian Nunes as keynote of 2020 state conference! Christian became NOW president on Aug 21, 2020. More on our conference at Registration will be at The NC NOW State conference begins the evening of Friday, Oct 9 and continues the morning through 1pm of Saturday, Oct 10. We’ll be on Zoom to make sure everyone stays safe.
