Thursday’s veto by Gov. Roy Cooper of the so-called “Born Alive” bill sends a clear message to the state legislature that these types of “junk science” bills on abortion will not stand in this state. We encourage the state legislature to learn from this failed effort and stop their attacks on women’s constitutional right to abortion.
The politicians and the groups behind these anti-abortion measures have always been in pursuit of a single goal. They want to ban all abortion, including in cases of rape and incest and return control of women’s bodies back to lawmakers. To do that, they need to find a case that can be taken to the Supreme Court and lead to a decision that repeals or severely limits Roe v. Wade.
The Senate Confirmation Hearings for Judge Brett Kavanaugh begin on 9/4/18. Protests are planned around the state this week, many on Tuesday, September 4th. Feel free to make your own and post in a comment or email president at raleighnow.org so we can help advertise.
These events are focused on our US Senators, Thom Tillis and Richard Burr, since our Senators get to vote on this nomination. In fact, it is their Senate duty of “advice and consent.” Under the Constitution, presidential nominations for executive and judicial posts take effect only when confirmed by the Senate. The Senate’s job is to make sure the nominee is qualified, and if not, to vote no.

Raleigh at Tillis’ office- The weekly Tuesdays With Tillis rally topic is “Stop Kavanaugh.” We always have a great showing for these, but this week we’re pulling in speakers on a variety of topics – reproductive rights, LGBTQ rights, civil rights/discrimination, environment, workers’ rights, abortion access threats, immigrant rights, threats to Planned Parenthood services. These areas and more are threatened should Brett Kavanaugh get a lifetime appointment on the US Supreme Court.

Pro-choice Signature Ad Appeal (2018). As the anniversary of the landmark Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision approaches, it is important for us to take a stand and make a public statement in support of the rights it protects. We invite you to join us in signing our annual pro-choice signature ad. The war against women’s reproductive rights has escalated to unprecedented heights. Numerous bills to restrict abortion rights or to outlaw it entirely have been introduced in Congress in 2017. See a few examples in the Pro-choice Signature Ad Appeal (2018).
