A coalition of organizations held a community conversations event “Public Education, Medicaid Expansion and the State Budget” in Fayetteville on Thursday, 7/25/19. Attendees heard from many very well qualified speakers on two panels – the first panel included community leaders, doctors, patients on need for Medicaid Expansion and returning public education to place of importance in state, and the second panel included some history of Medicaid expansion in NC and current shenanigans and chances with past and present lawmakers. Many organizations including NC NOW are joining the North Carolina Justice Center Health Advocacy Project in simultaneous vigils all over the state demanding expansion of Medicaid on Wednesday, June 5, 2019. The importance of expanding Medicaid cannot be overstated. Without health care people die.

How Trump Administration changes to the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and to Title X will hurt women. Here are many things people may not realize about women and health insurance. You will be shocked that women were charged more as a matter of course (called gender rating) and what was considered a pre-existing condition before ACA. You will also be shocked what this domestic Gag Rule will do.

ACA has some issues to be addressed, but it has helps tons of people – and the Republican Senate is intent on destroying it, and destroying these people in the process. In NC, tell Senators Burr and Tillis that you know that they voted against providing life-saving treatment to millions of people in the United States. They owe us better than that – improve ACA and use a decent bi-partisan process to do it. The cruel Trumpcare bills had already targetted women, who had been helped more by ACA.
The Wheel of Misfortune was the coolest feature of the last “Tuesdays with Tillis” protest. Also included a march, speakers, a die-in and attempted delivery of a dramatic wreath. July 5 theme is taking coverage away from Veterans. The July 11 theme is women and children.

While even President Trump described the House Trumpcare bill as ‘mean,’ his colorful verdict is an uncommon understatement as it applies to the House and Senate bills’ treatment of women’s healthcare. Trumpcare is ‘cruel’ to women, and especially harsh to North Carolinians.
