Action: Stop AHCA/Trumpcare NOW! Here is how..

Did you write NC (US) Senators Burr and Tillis about stopping the AHCA (Trumpcare) bill yet? The AHCA bill that the Republicans forced through the US House on May 4, 2017  is devastating

“This bill will put women directly in harm’s way by making health care inaccessible to people with pre-existing conditions–including those who have survived domestic violence, experienced postpartum depression, or undergone a cesarean section. ” As NOW.org wrote in their suggested email action at http://now.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/AHCAEmailYourSenators.pdf.

Congress’ own Congressional Budget Office estimated that 24 million people would lose health insurance from the plan. This estimate is from the March 2017 version of the bill that was not put up for a vote (due to expected failure), and the current plan (May 2017) is only worse. Read more about the harm this plan would do at https://www.cbo.gov/sites/default/files/115th-congress-2017-2018/costestimate/americanhealthcareact.pdf.

Trumpcare attacks women, elderly, more. Take Action NOW!

*TODAY* we must call our US Representatives in the House and demand that they oppose the American Health Care Act, which is the first step in repealing the Affordable Care Act (also known as Obamacare). We must call today! The vote is scheduled for Thursday, Mar 23, 2017. If you can’t get through on the phone – definitely use email! Most congresspeople have a contact us interface you need to use. Do it! That way, too, your rep will likely email you a response.

“The latest version of the bill allows states to kick new mothers off Medicaid, in addition to defunding Planned Parenthood and eliminating coverage for women’s reproductive healthcare,” according to a March 21st press release from Congressional Members of the House, and other sources. Find it at In Updated Repeal Bill, Republicans Tell New Mothers: Find Work Immediately or Lose Coverage.

Call your Congressman or Congresswoman. If you live in North Carolina, find your Congresswo/man by looking up your address/zip code at http://www.ncleg.net/representation/WhoRepresentsMe.aspx. Use the third map – United States House Of Representatives.

Why Tillis does not know what to expect at Town Halls

In “Tillis is open to town halls, minus shouting,” 3/6/17, N&O, Senator Thom Tillis alleges that people who go to his town hall meetings shout and call names, so he doesn’t go. In fact, he has not been to a town hall meeting this year (the $25 a head Durham Chamber of Commerce meeting on March 6 does not count, nor does the March 7th phone call he offered with only an hours’ notice on social media). It is natural he does not know what to expect.

Senator Tillis, we have been to two town hall meetings held in your honor, and you’ve got it all wrong.

First, the people there are not scary or menacing. They look like, well, people. You don’t have to take our word for it though, there are lots of pictures online.

Medicaid Reform and Expansion Panel Writeup

NC NOW still sees the need to expand Medicaid and is worried about the plans to reform Medicaid.  A few of us attended a panel “Medicaid Reform and Expansion: A Panel Discussion” on April 20th, 2016 at the NCSU McKimmon Conference Center (starting at 7:30pm).  This League of Women Voters (LWV) sponsored event featured a panel discussion about Medicaid reform and expansion in North Carolina. Panelists were Susan Shumaker, President of the Cone Health Foundation; Rob Luisana of Pilot Benefits; and Representative Marilyn Avila, House District 40 (R-Wake).  Dr. Jim Foster was the moderator and MC (he is standing at the podium in this picture).  Dr. Foster is a Retired Cardiologist, and a member of the LWV-ODC.
