2019 Raleigh Women’s March Speakers and Quotes

Quotes from some of the speakers and performers at the 2019 Raleigh Women’s March. Such impressive speakers and we would prefer to be able to capture each speech and performance, but here are some pearls of wisdom. Performers got their messages across in their own unique ways.

Longtime activist Mandy Carter was one of our EmCees and also our speaker on LGBTQ issues.

“I’ve been wondering how change happens. And I think the best way to describe it is the changing of hearts and minds and public policy.” – Mandy Carter

NC NOW Legislative Update #3, War On Women Continues – 18 Feb 19

The war on women’s reproductive rights continues with the introduction of two new anti-abortion bills. See the whole summary and NC bills NC NOW is tracking in NC NOW 2019 Legislative Update #3.18 February 2019.

The first is SB51/HB54, frighteningly called Unborn Child Protection from Dismemberment. This bill attacks late term abortion by banning a commonly used procedure called “dilation and extraction” or “D&E.” Another bill (HB28, introduced last week) attempts to block late term abortions by banning all abortion after 13 weeks. The sad truth is that almost all late term abortions end wanted pregnancies that have gone tragically, heartbreakingly wrong. This bill (SB51/HB54) does not take into account that the procedure it bans is also used to terminate pregnancies after the fetus has died and makes no exception for these cases. The procedure is rare (0.2% of terminated pregnancies). For more information, see: “No, Late-Term Abortions Don’t ‘Rip’ Babies Out Of Wombs — And They Exist For A Reason, 10/20/16, Forbes at https://www.forbes.com/sites/tarahaelle/2016/10/20/no-late-term-abortions-dont-rip-babies-out-of-wombs-but-they-are-needed/#395c7bd65cf8.

#StopKavanaugh Event Summary, Raleigh, 9/4/18

The first day of the Senate Confirmation Hearings on nominee Judge Brett Kavanaugh were like a three ring circus. Democrats protested loudly that most of Kavanaugh’s work records had not been released to them.  Senators and protesters took turns interrupting the event – all with good reason. Including that “hours before Kavanaugh nomination hearings, Bush lawyer releases 42,000 pages of documents to Judiciary Committee!

Multiple media sources ran articles and video with the same title in print – “Chaos marks start of Kavanaugh hearings!” 9/4/18, Washington Post. Online longer titles were used, like “Partisan fury bursts into the open as Kavanaugh hearings begin.” But it wasn’t only Democratic Senators who were trying to delay the hearing to make for a fairer and more informed process. Most of the protesters were women.  The same article said, “The protesters, who were predominantly women, repeatedly heckled the senators and Kavanaugh, arguing that installing Trump’s second pick to the Supreme Court would irreparably end access to abortion and dismantle the Affordable Care Act.”

My favorite summary of Day One is two women reviewing it on Rewired.com atBoom! Lawyered: Kavanaugh Hearing, Day One—Changing the Rules.

Stop Kavanaugh Events Around NC – starting 9/4/18

The Senate Confirmation Hearings for Judge Brett Kavanaugh begin on 9/4/18. Protests are planned around the state this week, many on Tuesday, September 4th. Feel free to make your own and post in a comment or email president at raleighnow.org so we can help advertise.
.
These events are focused on our US Senators, Thom Tillis and Richard Burr, since our Senators get to vote on this nomination. In fact, it is their Senate duty of “advice and consent.” Under the Constitution, presidential nominations for executive and judicial posts take effect only when confirmed by the Senate. The Senate’s job is to make sure the nominee is qualified, and if not, to vote no.

These areas and more are threatened should Brett Kavanaugh get a lifetime appointment on the US Supreme Court.

Take Action on SCOTUS Nominee Neil Gorsuch NOW

NOW Urges that Senator(s) filibuster the confirmation of Neil Gorsuch and, should a filibuster fail, vote “no”.
.
There are many things wrong with this man as a judge and worse as a Supreme Court justice.
.
According to NOW, “Neil Gorsuch has a long history of hostility towards the claims of workers, consumers, children, immigrants, LGBTQIA people, incarcerated people, people with disabilities, and others seeking protection from the privileged and powerful. Equally disturbingly, “his track record on money in politics comes down decisively on the side of billionaire donors and big corporations.” As if that weren’t enough: Gorsuch has shown, through previous judicial decisions, that he is not a supporter of women’s rights, will not protect their access to birth control, nor their constitutional right to abortion through Roe v. Wade.”

From another view, can you imagine the Republicans allowing Hillary Clinton to nominate someone to the Supreme Court while she was under investigation by the FBI and by Congress?

The Continuing Manufactured Disaster of HB2

Last year in our pro-choice signature ad packet letter to legislators, NC NOW pointed out that HB2, Public Facilities Privacy & Security Act., has been a disaster for North Carolina. The state was already suffering the loss of hundreds of millions of dollars in economic investments in our state and potentially billions in federal support to the state’s K-12 schools, colleges and universities. Yet, the law goes way beyond bathrooms and targeting a group of citizens. It removes core worker anti-discrimination protections that state law has provided to workers since the 1970s. It also targets women, whether intentional or not.  When HB2 first happened, NC NOW recognized how disastrous HB 2 is for women. But it has been disastrous for the state as well.

And it just continues to cause massive losses. The majority in the NC Legislature don’t seem to care, they keep voting to leave it in place, refusing to repeal it. Just in one weekend in March, the city of Greensboro lost out on an estimated 14.5 MILLION DOLLARS because of House Bill 2!  That estimate that the NCAA would have brought in around 14.5 million dollars is from the Greensboro Area Convention and Visitor Bureau.

The tens of thousands of people who should have gone to Greensboro for the NCAA tournament went to Greenville, South Carolina instead. According to S.C. reaping HB2 Bounty, 3/15/17, News & Observer,

Why nominee Neil Gorsuch is bad for the US Supreme Court

Please join some of NC’s progressive organizations as we speak out against Trump Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch on Monday, March 20, at 11am, at 310 New Bern Ave, in front of Senator Thom Tillis’ office. See the facebook event for “Media event: Progressives speak out against Neil Gorsuch” at https://www.facebook.com/events/143022306221621/
.
NOW Urges that Senator(s) filibuster the confirmation of Neil Gorsuch and, should a filibuster fail, vote “no”.
Main issues described in NOW’s brief.
  1. Republicans do not deserve control of this stolen seat.
  2. Gorsuch has a history of hostility toward all kinds of regular and disadvantaged people seeking protections from the privileged and the powerful.
  3. He tends to rule for billionaire donors and big corporations.
  4. He has a frightening willingness to limit women’s access to health care.
  5. He is extremely anti-abortion based on his writings.

Why Tillis does not know what to expect at Town Halls

In “Tillis is open to town halls, minus shouting,” 3/6/17, N&O, Senator Thom Tillis alleges that people who go to his town hall meetings shout and call names, so he doesn’t go. In fact, he has not been to a town hall meeting this year (the $25 a head Durham Chamber of Commerce meeting on March 6 does not count, nor does the March 7th phone call he offered with only an hours’ notice on social media). It is natural he does not know what to expect.

Senator Tillis, we have been to two town hall meetings held in your honor, and you’ve got it all wrong.

First, the people there are not scary or menacing. They look like, well, people. You don’t have to take our word for it though, there are lots of pictures online.

Paliga: Burr and Tillis – “F” for FAIL

I am outraged that Senators Burr and Tillis’ votes for Education Secretary nominee Betsy DeVos have thrown North Carolina’s children under the bus – the school bus. Senator Tillis even served as PTA President for his daughter’s High School, but that didn’t stop him from putting in office an unqualified – but filthy rich – nominee who many believe is hostile to public education. And let it be made clear this is not proof of supporting women in leadership – both Tillis and Burr have blocked well qualified African-American nominees like Loretta Lynch, Jennifer May Parker and Patricia Timmons-Goodsen.

DeVos has no personal experience in public education, not as student, parent, teacher or administration. In fact, she has worked to undermine public education, spending more than two decades promoting taxpayer-subsidized vouchers for private and parochial school tuition and promoting publicly funded but privately run charter schools. She also tried to strip teacher unions of their influence.
