NC NOW Legislative Update #3 of the Short Session, 4 Jun 18 talks about the budget as the most controversial in modern history—not for what it contains, but for the process it went through. The process was explained in detail in NC NOW’s Legislative Update #2 for the Short Session, 28 May 18. This week, people learned more about some inappropriate recipients of taxpayer money, and what the budget did and did not do. The Legislative Update also lists the bills that NC NOW is tracking – bill numbers, summaries, and where they are in the process.
Speech by NC NOW President Gailya Paliga, given at Tuesdays With Tillis event on 5/22/18. Topics the Trump Administration’s latest attack on women and Planned Parenthood. Topics at the event were this new domestic gag rule and Crisis Pregnancy Centers.
Funneling money to fake women’s clinics while defunding Planned Parenthood sends a clear message that our leadership does not care about women’s health; especially low-income women. At this 5/22/18 event, we will focus on Crisis Pregnancy Centers, CPCs, which lie to women and scare and manipulate them in order to prevent them from having abortions. CPCs being allowed to lie is currently under consideration by the Supreme Court. Also looking at state and federal funding sources, and the new Trump attack on Planned Parenthood funding that just happened on 5/18/18.
DC friends are hearing from Senate staff that there are not enough calls going to the Senate to stop the tax bill which will inevitably result in cuts to health care programs and more pain for the middle class and the poor. Call or write NOW! THIS IS A FIVE ALARM FIRE!
We have 3 actions to take on national issues. Oppose the House Budget which slashes trillions of dollars from healthcare, food and income assistance, education and more. Oppose HR 38 – giving domestic violence offenders the right to stalk and kill their intimate partners across state lines! Oppose HR 36 – another abortion ban.
Have you called your Senators yet to tell them to vote AGAINST the latest terrible Trumpcare proposal? Please do. We *MUST* persist. See what is in the latest bad bill, and where to call and write.
ACA has some issues to be addressed, but it has helps tons of people – and the Republican Senate is intent on destroying it, and destroying these people in the process. In NC, tell Senators Burr and Tillis that you know that they voted against providing life-saving treatment to millions of people in the United States. They owe us better than that – improve ACA and use a decent bi-partisan process to do it. The cruel Trumpcare bills had already targetted women, who had been helped more by ACA.
Read more about Medicaid and the damage that Trumpcare will do in the following articles, among other places. Also no state would fare worse than North Carolina, where 1.3 million in NC could lose health insurance under Senate health plan.
While even President Trump described the House Trumpcare bill as ‘mean,’ his colorful verdict is an uncommon understatement as it applies to the House and Senate bills’ treatment of women’s healthcare. Trumpcare is ‘cruel’ to women, and especially harsh to North Carolinians.
