North Carolina has a Black maternal health crisis in as well as gaps in reproductive health care that was further exposed during the pandemic. The maternal death rate is especially high in North Carolina. North Carolina ranks 30th out of the 50 states. Nationally Black women are two to three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related issues than white or Hispanic women. The United States has the highest maternal death rate of all the Western democracies, and, most alarmingly, the rate has been rising. North Carolina NOW supports the passage of the North Carolina Momnibus Act  (SB632/HB 507) that targets the Black maternal health crisis in the state and addresses the gaps in reproductive health care during the pandemic. Abortion Is Healthcare Event, Raleigh, 6/11/19

“Abortion Is Healthcare” was the theme of the 125th week of rallies at Senator Thom Tillis’ office in Raleigh. This event included national, statewide and local updates on abortion and clinics access. Emcees and speakers included Gailya Paliga, President of NC NOW, Tara Romano, Executive Director of Naral Pro-choice North Carolina and Kelsea McLain, A Woman’s Choice Clinic of Raleigh. Topics went from challenges women face to solutions moving in the US House, and what we need from Senator Tillis and other representatives.

Abortion has been all over the news lately. Different types of abortion bans have become law recently in various states. Missouri is trying hard to shut down the last clinic in Missouri. In fact, in the midst of the fight between the state and the last clinic, Missouri just added a punitive regulation requiring women seeking a legal abortion in the state to undergo a mandatory, medically unnecessary, invasive pelvic examination. North Carolina has its own drama that played out with one of the abortion ban bills. NC NOW Legislative Update #10 – 8 April 2019 – Two Pro-women Bills Introduced

Week 10, another bad abortion bill was introduced, this bill also does not hold up under scientific scrutiny.  Also, NCGA interference in law enforcement, as they threaten Sheriffs with massive fines to force them to work as extensions of ICE. Two positive bills were filed – the North Carolina Equal Pay Act and the Enact NC Healthy Pregnancy Act.
