A slew of major anti-abortion bills are passing in states, with some being signed into law around the country. These laws are designed to oppress and control women. The goal is to overturn Roe v Wade, using the new makeup of the US Supreme Court with Kavanaugh and Gorsuch.
NC NOW Legislative Update #12 has some good news following bad news last week. Governor Cooper has vetoed an anti-abortion bill that was rushed through the legislature last week, and it will be difficult for Republican supporters to override it. Also, a judge ruled that Rev. William Barber can no longer be banned from the legislative building in time for the Teacher’s March and Rally on May 1. More bills were introduced, again, to fix longstanding problems in NC – Right to Revoke Consent (SB563) and one to handle sexual harassment involving legislators (HB817).
There has been a rash of anti-abortion bills introduced in the NC Legislature. The so called ‘Born Alive’ bill which was recently rushed through the Senate and House is a dangerous political maneuver that has no basis in science. There is no such thing as legislatively protected infanticide in North Carolina—or anywhere else in the U.S. This bill and other “junk science” bills are not designed to protect women. Instead, they are designed to deter women from having an abortion.

On 2/22/19, the Trump administration finalized sweeping changes to Title X, the federal program that provides birth control and other reproductive health services to millions of low-income Americans. These regulations ban federal family planning funds from going to health providers who perform or refer patients for abortion services, and force abortion providers under the program to physically separate abortion services from other family planning services. These regulations ban federally funded health-care providers from even mentioning the word “abortion.” Limiting what U.S. health providers can say to patients amounts to a domestic “gag rule.” Gag rules are designed to hurt women, and they do so with devastating efficiency. Join NOW, Naral Pro-Choice North Carolina, Planned Parenthood (PP) and #Fight4HER at 11:30am on 3/12/19 at 310 New Bern Ave in Raleigh to learn more and communicate issues to Senator Thom Tillis.
