First step of progress on the state budget – but very far to go. Some history on unapproved budgets in NC. Take action on anti-abortion bill HB 453 – call Governor Cooper! Update on SB 35, seeking to raise the marriage age FROM 14!!
This week there were two significant developments on our issues–one good and one disappointing. The good news is that HB 358, which would have barred transgender girls and young women from participating in school sports designated for females, is dead. The disappointing news is that a bill to raise the marriage age to 18 with no exceptions (HB 41/SB 35) was gutted. The amended bill brings the existing law into line with the sexual assault statute– something that should have been done when the marital rape exemption was repealed–while retaining all of the archaic exemptions that allow marriage as young as age 14.
This week saw the introduction of two terrible bills. The religious right has had so much success on the medical front passing laws to regulate abortion and abortion providers, they have decided to widen the scope of their activities to deny trans youth medical care (SB 514). The second bill (SB 515) would legalize medical discrimination across the board by introducing a bill that would allow doctors and other medical personnel along with hospitals and other medical practices to deny medical care to anyone for conscientious reasons. It is worthwhile to examine these two bills in detail because they provide important insight into the kind of world these religious extremists desire.
The NCGA is targeting immigrants and forcing sheriffs to do ICE’s job and bidding in North Carolina, while the Trump Administration has moved to impose the cost of a manufactured border crisis on other countries in one move, and to completely cut off refugees in another. Rally with us against cruel chaos being caused with people’s lives in the balance.
Demonstrations around North Carolina to stop human detention of immigrants and close the camps.
The treatment of immigrants and immigrant children is heartbreaking, and must be stopped. Join us at two protests in the next two weeks – 7/2/19 and 7/12/19.
Medicare and Medicaid’s 53rd birthday was July 30, 2018; Social Security’s 83rd birthday is August 14. All three of these programs are under attack by the same people who recently gave a 1.5 trillion dollar tax cut to the wealthy last fall. One in three Americans is currently covered by Medicaid or Medicare. These programs are vital for the survival of some of our most vulnerable people, and the intention of Paul Ryan as well as some NC legislators to cut them is widely known and would be detrimental to us all. This week’s rally calls attention to the importance of these programs and exposes some threats. This is the 80th consecutive Tuesdays With Tillis rally we’ve held.
Again in 2018, citizens have the opportunity to publicly show their respect for and appreciation of Science in the face of the Trump administration’s demonstrated disdain for Science. Some cities are hosting Marches for Science this year – Raleigh and Greensboro NC on April 14, 2018 for sure. Western NC has an option in SC on April 21, 2018. Female and male scientists are featured. The Raleigh March For Science includes special activities for children.
Trying to keep track of press coverage of the WMOR during and after the march. Attendance estimates are now up to 40,000 based on people studying and estimating based on pictures of the actual march. Thanks to Sarah Moncelle for putting this together at https://womensmarchonraleigh.org/press/.
Wildin Acosta’s Durham community managed to keep his case alive in the hearts and minds of his Durham school community, city community, and in the news. Their hard work gives him a chance to plead his asylum case, keeps the ICE raids and deportations in the news, and keeps attention on the terrible way that the United States is treating children, families and individuals. Read it to believe it.
