NC NOW Legislative Update, 4 Jun 18

NC NOW Legislative Update #3 of the Short Session, 4 Jun 18 talks about the budget as the most controversial in modern history—not for what it contains, but for the process it went through. The process was explained in detail in NC NOW’s Legislative Update #2 for the Short Session, 28 May 18. This week, people learned more about some inappropriate recipients of taxpayer money, and what the budget did and did not do. The Legislative Update also lists the bills that NC NOW is tracking – bill numbers, summaries, and where they are in the process.

$1.55 Million in Taxpayer Money Going to CPCs in NC Budget

Information and Actions to take! The NCGA is giving taxpayer money away to Crisis Pregnancy Centers. They gave $1.3 million away in the 2017 budget, and have increased the amount in the 2018 budget. The money is going to 3 CPC umbrella organizations! Take action here!

You Can’t Believe this Terrible NC State Budget

Even just the titles of these articles give you an idea how terrible this state budget is. This is the state budget for which the NCGA leadership subverted the process so there can be no amendments or discussion on it. The first two scathing articles are about the Republican leadership circumventing the budget process. The next articles are about some of the things they have done in the budget they won’t allow to be changed – they are giving $1.55 million away to anti-abortion pregnancy clinics (aka Crisis Pregnancy Clinics). They cut suicide hotline money. They refuse to fund the tracking of the 15,160 untested rape kits. They are giving veteran teachers absolutely nothing. Again. And more.

February/March 2018 NC NOW Newsletter Available

NC NOW Newsletter for February and March 2018 includes stories of how people in Fayetteville got that untested rape kit inventory done across NC (with Fayetteville NOW’s help), some events around the state (Trauma to Prison Pipeline Report, Title IX at FSU, more), national events on #EnoughIsEnough and the next US Supreme Court case, NIFLA v. Becerra, on what CPCs can say in California. Currently CPCs need to tell the truth in California, and the National Institute of Family and Life Advocates are suing to change that!

NC NOW Legislative Update #21 – NC Budget Bad For Women

The NC Budget is bad for women and the state. This budget intensifies the attack on women’s reproductive rights by appropriating $2.6 million to crisis pregnancy centers over a two-year period. It discontinues health care benefits for retired state workers and teachers. It removes a major benefit of working for the state – state employees (including teachers) hired after January 2021 will no longer receive health insurance benefits. In addition, this budget continues the disturbing practice of including policy that has never voted on in the budget. In general, the Republican policy of tax cuts for corporations and the wealthy along with cuts to programs that benefit low income citizens continues in this budget.
