Kirkendale: Re-energized to Persist at the 2018 NC NOW Conference

“Ladies all across the world
Listen up, we’re looking for recruits
If you with me, lemme see your hands
Stand up and salute
Get your killer heels, sneakers, pumps or lace up your boots
Representing all the women, salute, salute.”

“Salute” by Little Mix

Audrey Muck aptly chose this song as accompaniment to her update on the ERA, inspiring us to dance in and out of our seats – much needed during the 2pm time slot! The Women Rising Up NOW! 2018 State Conference couldn’t have come at a better time for me personally: deeply discouraged by the confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court, following two back to back trips to Washington DC to join the “angry mob” of dedicated women, survivors and allies from across the country in bird-dogging, direct actions, and speak-outs at the U.S. Senate and at the Supreme Court, I missed the company of kindred spirits acutely.

Inspiring “Seeing Allred” in Raleigh on 10/19/18

There is some great incentive to coming in to Raleigh the night before the NC NOW state conference – we’re screening “Seeing Allred,” a new documentary about Women’s Rights Attorney Gloria Allred.

The NC NOW State Conference is on Saturday, 10/20/18, with the theme of “Women Rising Up NOW!” To show what one woman can do, and in line with our conference theme, we are screening “Seeing Allred” for our event on Friday, 10/19/18, at 7pm.  Attorney Gloria Allred is an inspiration! The film intertwines the stories of her life and her persistence in going after actor Bill Cosby with what ended up being 50 women willing to speak out about what he did to them.

Stop Kavanaugh Events Around NC – starting 9/4/18

The Senate Confirmation Hearings for Judge Brett Kavanaugh begin on 9/4/18. Protests are planned around the state this week, many on Tuesday, September 4th. Feel free to make your own and post in a comment or email president at raleighnow.org so we can help advertise.
.
These events are focused on our US Senators, Thom Tillis and Richard Burr, since our Senators get to vote on this nomination. In fact, it is their Senate duty of “advice and consent.” Under the Constitution, presidential nominations for executive and judicial posts take effect only when confirmed by the Senate. The Senate’s job is to make sure the nominee is qualified, and if not, to vote no.

NC NOW Legislative Update #11 – more derision and secret budget deals

The week ending 15 April 2017 has been another busy week at the NCGA, as captured in North_Carolina_NOW_Legislative_Update_11.v3.16Apr17.

A bill introduced in the legislature again made North Carolina the object of national derision.  House Bill 780, Uphold Historical Marriage, declared that the Supreme Court decision legalizing same-sex marriage is null and void in North Carolina and that the constitutional amendment banning same sex marriage should be enforced.  After a national outcry, Speaker Moore publicly announced that this bill will never be heard in committee, that it is dead.  But damage had already been done. See http://www.wral.com/gay-marriage-ban-filed-in-nc-house-/16639157/, 4/11/17.

Then neo-Confederate Rep. Larry Pittman (also a sponsor or HB780) attracted national attention by stating that Abraham Lincoln was the same kind of tyrant as Hitler.
