Owens: There Is No Cycle Of Abuse

I wish I had a nickel for every time I hear the phrase “the cycle of abuse.” It’s constant. People say about victims,”she really needs to break the cycle!” (This makes me so angry! As if the victim could do that anyway, when she has no control of the abuse – its not HER behavior!)

Here’s what you need to know. There IS NO “cycle” of abuse. We don’t need to be using that term. If you use it, please stop.

DV Expert Julie Owens at Voices of Domestic Violence Town Hall in Winston-Salem on 4/11/19

The cycle theory of abuse is no longer used by professionals in this field because we understand DV much, much better after decades of work with victims, and learning from them.

DV Town Hall Opens Wider Discussion of Problem, 2/18/19

Domestic Violence (DV) activist and educator Kit Gruelle shares a deeply disturbing fact – the most dangerous place for a woman in America is her own home. Domestic violence crimes account for 40% of all calls to police and only half of the domestic violence incidences are reported. Across America, at least four women, on average, are murdered by abusive partners every day.

Acts of domestic violence go largely unreported because the victims are afraid of violent retaliation from their partners. Victims of domestic violence should be heard without fear for their or their loved one’s lives.

NC NOW (National Organization for Women), SAFE Transylvania, and Progress NC have come together to bring community awareness to this very real problem.

Stop the Assaults, Stop The Violence, #MeToo Event and Action

The President of NC National Organization for Women, Gailya Paliga, led #TuesdaysWithTillis on Nov 14, 2017, with the theme of “Stop the Violence, Stop the Assault/#MeToo.” It was chilly outside, but 45 people and 2 dogs protested anyway. This was Week #43 of the Tuesdays With Tillis protests and still going strong. The next week’s theme (11/21/17)  is DACA/Dreamers.

Sept 13, 2017 was the 23rd anniversary of the passage of VAWA, which is severely threatened with Donald Trump (who bragged about committing sexual assault) in office. The VAWA bill is gender-neutral and includes funding for rape crisis centers and hotlines, services for victims with disabilities, legal aide for survivors, and more.

Senator Richard Burr voted against reauthorizing VAWA in 2012, and Senator Thom Tillis isn’t on record yet.
