People around North Carolina and the country are holding pro-Democracy rallies on January 6, 2023. The purpose of these rallies is to remember that a violent and deadly attempt to overthrow our government on Jan. 6, 2021, was nearly successful. It is also to demand that elected leaders pass legislation to protect voting and democracy. Included here are ‘Our Freedoms, Our Votes’ rallies in Chapel Hill and Raleigh so far.
The January 6th Committee released their final report on Dec. 23, 2022. In the 845 page report, the committee determined that Donald Trump should be barred from office, and included new revelations about Trump’s attempt to overturn his 2020 election loss. The committee referred Trump to the Justice Department this week for four charges of federal offenses! The report came out before Republicans take control of the US House in January. At the same time, Democrats won control of the US Senate.
According to Democracy Out Loud, an Indivisible group, with their rally, they want people to look ahead with the intention 1) to pass local, state, and federal legislation to protect our freedoms, 2) to push back against the potential sham investigations the new Congress is planning, and 3) to uplift the findings of real investigations like that of the Jan 6 Congressional Committee.
The rally will highlight North Carolina politicians’ part in the attack. Remember that our newly-elected U.S. Senator, Ted Budd, was one of 34 Representatives who texted Mark Meadows to plan this attack on our democracy, and one of 118 who voted after the violence not to certify the results of the 2020 election. Mark Meadows himself resigned from Congress, where he was representing North Carolina, to work for Trump.
Details will be posted soon, but we know of rallies planned in Chapel Hill and in Raleigh so far. Rallies were held in 2022 as well. However, things look so much better after the official and bi-partisan January 6 Committee report was completed and released.
