Wilmington Women’s Rally with Pix – 3/16/24

Congratulations to WOW (Women Organizing for Wilmington) on another successful rally on Saturday March 16th in Wilmington NC. Over 200 people attended the women’s rally, which included a rally at Innes Park in Wilmington, and then Karaoke at The Bodega. The rally was full of passion, people (mostly women), and great information.

Sonya Bennetone-Patrick, the Southern Chair of the National Black Leadership Caucus, was one of the many amazing speakers. One of the things she said was “Women have the voting power to change NC.” We all need to remember this and take it seriously. And also remember to “make public officials accountable before, during and after the election.”

Marla Barthen, one of the organizers, clarified that the songs at Karaoke were all women centered. They also had “chick eggs” as party favors – easter eggs with buttons, stickers, condoms and other things inside. No babies inside though 😉

Marla spoke on the Equal Rights Amendment. She is the chair of fundraising for the ERA-NC Alliance. NC NOW Is part of that alliance.

Marla explained in the interview that “Community members came to the rally and shared speeches about why women’s rights matter to them. People also spoke about how political decisions impact their way of life and personal beliefs.”

“I believe that this election more than any other election in my lifetime, which spans decades and decades, is going to be the most important election for not only me, but every other generation,” said community activist Pam McMahon. McMahon also said, “Women contribute so much to this country. And if women do not have appropriate health care, if older women do not have health care, if women in their 50s do not help have health care, women in their teens, women in their 20s do not have health care, we are losing an incredible resource that this country cannot afford to lose.”
